The BEMB Trust was founded in 1971 using the residual funds (approximately £550k) available when the former British Egg Marketing Board was disbanded.  The Trust's remit was to support the "improvement and advancement ..... of the production of hen or duck eggs in the UK ..... by advancing, promoting, conducting, encouraging ..... education, investigations, research and experimental or development work to that end ..... "

The Trust consists of 3 nominated Trustees and 3-4 co-opted Trustees, at least one of whom should be an eminent poultry (eggs) scientist.

The Trust has, throughout its history, achieved its aims by using its limited funds to:

  • support appropriate PhD projects by sponsoring the student concerned
  • sponsor a Nuffield Farming Scholarship in an appropriate subject
  • sponsor career path development in an appropriate subject
  • contribute to other appropriate research projects submitted by senior scientists in universities and institutions.
Over the last decade The Trust has focused more on on the problems of red mite with several research projects being supported on this subject.  In 2013 the Trust initiated and coordinated a workshop bringing all the UK red mite research groups together with representatives of the research community and/or poultry egg sector from several EU countries.  This led onto the forming of an EU wide red mite research group which has since led to many collaborative projects.
